Why Is My House So Humid? (A Pacific Northwest Problem)
In the South Sound, indoor humidity usually comes from our damp marine air, moisture rising out of the crawlspace, and homes too tightly built to exhale — often made worse by an oversized AC that cools without dehumidifying.

If your house feels muggy, your windows fog up every winter morning, or closets smell faintly of damp, the cause is almost always some combination of four things: the Pacific Northwest's naturally humid marine air, moisture migrating up from the crawlspace, a home that's sealed too tightly to ventilate itself, and — in summer — an air conditioner that's too big to wring moisture out of the air. None of these fix themselves, but all of them are fixable.
Why is the Pacific Northwest so hard on indoor humidity?
Western Washington sits in a marine climate. Air off Puget Sound carries moisture most of the year, and our mild temperatures mean that air doesn't get dried out by deep cold the way it does east of the Cascades. At the same time, modern building practice — and decades of weatherization in older Lakewood, Tacoma, and Olympia homes — has made houses much tighter. A tight house is great for energy bills, but everyday living adds a surprising amount of water to the air: cooking, showers, laundry, houseplants, even breathing. If that moisture has no engineered way out, it accumulates.
Where is the moisture actually coming from?
- The crawlspace. This is the big one in the South Sound. Most homes here sit over vented crawlspaces on damp ground. Water vapor rises through the soil, through gaps in the vapor barrier, and up into the living space — a slow, constant humidifier under your floor. Musty smells, cupping hardwood, and mold on floor joists are the tell-tale signs.
- Ventilation deficits. Bath fans that vent into the attic instead of outdoors, range hoods that recirculate, or simply fans nobody runs long enough. Moisture generated indoors stays indoors.
- An oversized air conditioner. Cooling equipment dehumidifies as a by-product of long run cycles. An oversized system blasts the house cold in a few minutes and shuts off before it has pulled meaningful moisture from the air. The result is a house that's cool but clammy — a common complaint in homes where equipment was sized by guesswork instead of a load calculation.
- Winter condensation. When indoor humidity meets cold window glass, water condenses. Persistent winter condensation isn't a window problem so much as a humidity problem — the glass is just where the moisture becomes visible.
Why it matters beyond comfort
Sustained indoor humidity feeds mold and dust mites, both of which aggravate allergies and asthma. It also damages the house itself: swollen trim, peeling paint, rusting fasteners, and rot in framing and subfloors. Most building-science guidance puts a healthy indoor range around 30 to 50 percent relative humidity — an inexpensive hygrometer will tell you where you stand.
The solutions ladder, from simplest to most involved
- Use and fix ventilation. Run bath fans during and well after showers, verify they actually vent outdoors, and use the range hood when cooking. This is free or nearly free and helps every home.
- Address the crawlspace. A continuous ground vapor barrier — and in wetter sites, encapsulation with drainage — cuts off the largest moisture source many South Sound homes have.
- Add mechanical ventilation. Tight homes benefit from a dedicated fresh-air strategy, such as a heat recovery ventilator, which exhausts stale humid air while recovering heat from it — well suited to our mild climate.
- Right-size the cooling equipment. If your AC or heat pump short-cycles and the house feels cold-but-damp, proper sizing (or a variable-speed system that runs long, gentle cycles) restores real dehumidification.
- Install a dedicated dehumidifier. For stubborn cases — crawlspace units or whole-home ducted dehumidifiers — this puts moisture removal under direct control regardless of weather.
