MERV Filters, UV Lights, ERVs and Air Cleaners: What's Actually Worth It?

In honest order: fix pollutant sources first, upgrade filtration to around MERV 13 second, add ventilation if your home is tight, and treat UV and electronic air cleaners as targeted extras — not the starting point.

Most homes never need step 4. Spending on purification before fixing sources and filtration is buying a mop for a leaking roof.

Walk the indoor air quality aisle — or sit through some sales pitches — and you'd think the answer to every air problem is a plasma-ionizing gadget. It isn't. Indoor air quality has a well-established hierarchy, and money spent out of order is money wasted. The honest sequence is: control the sources, filter the air, ventilate the house, and only then consider purification devices for specific problems. Here's each rung of that ladder, including what we'd tell a neighbor to skip.

Rung 1: Source control — why is it always first?

No device removes a pollutant as effectively as not generating it. Run the range hood when cooking, fix moisture problems before they become mold, store solvents and gas cans outside living space, and keep combustion appliances maintained and properly vented. It's unglamorous, largely free, and it outperforms every gadget below it. Any IAQ conversation that skips this step is a sales pitch, not a plan.

Rung 2: Filtration — what do MERV ratings actually mean?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how well a filter captures particles of different sizes. The basic ladder:

  • MERV 1–8: Catches dust and lint. Protects the equipment more than your lungs.
  • MERV 9–12: Starts capturing finer dust and some mold spores.
  • MERV 13: Captures a meaningful share of the fine particles that matter most for health — including wildfire smoke particulate and many virus-carrying droplets.
  • MERV 14+ / HEPA: Hospital-grade capture, but with airflow resistance most residential blowers can't handle in the main duct.

MERV 13 is the sweet spot for most homes: real health-relevant filtration without exotic equipment. One critical caveat — a thin one-inch MERV 13 filter can choke airflow, straining the blower and hurting performance. The right way to run high-MERV filtration is a media cabinet holding a four- or five-inch thick filter, which has far more surface area and much lower resistance. If your system only takes one-inch filters, that cabinet is the first upgrade to discuss.

Rung 3: Ventilation — why do tight PNW homes need an ERV or HRV?

Filters clean the air you have; ventilation replaces it. Newer, tightly built Washington homes are great for energy bills but trap moisture, CO2, and off-gassed chemicals indoors. An ERV (energy recovery ventilator) or HRV (heat recovery ventilator) exchanges stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air while transferring most of the heat between the streams — fresh air without throwing your heating energy out the wall. In our mild, damp climate, these are legitimate, well-proven upgrades for tight construction. Bonus for smoke season: bringing fresh air in through a ducted, filtered path beats cracking a window.

Rung 4: Purification — what do UV lights and air cleaners really do?

UV coil lights shine ultraviolet light on the indoor coil — a dark, damp surface where biological growth loves to establish. Keeping that coil clean is a real, legitimate job. What a coil UV light does not do is purify the air sweeping past it; the exposure time is too short. Fair positioning: coil hygiene device, not an air purifier.

Electronic air cleaners charge or ionize particles so they're easier to capture. Results vary widely by design, and they need regular cleaning to keep working. They can supplement good media filtration; they shouldn't replace it.

The ozone warning: some ionizers and all intentional "ozone generators" produce ozone — a lung irritant. Avoid any device marketed on ozone output, and prefer equipment verified as low- or zero-ozone. This is the corner of the IAQ market where healthy skepticism earns its keep.

What about wildfire smoke season?

Smoke season has become a fact of Washington life, and it's the strongest practical case for this whole ladder: a sealed-up house with a thick MERV 13 media filter and the fan circulating can hold noticeably cleaner air than outdoors during smoke events. That's filtration and envelope doing the work — no plasma required.
