Mini-Split Not Heating? A Ductless Troubleshooting Guide
Most mini-split heating complaints trace back to the remote being in the wrong mode, a normal defrost pause, or clogged filters and blower wheel — and only sometimes to refrigerant or a true fault.

When a mini-split stops heating, the cause is usually something small: the remote is in the wrong mode, the outdoor unit is in a routine defrost cycle, or the filters and blower wheel are dirty enough to choke airflow. Genuine failures — refrigerant leaks, sensor faults, board problems — do happen, but they're the minority. Work through the simple checks first and you'll often have heat back in minutes.
Is the remote actually in Heat mode?
This is the single most common "no heat" call on ductless systems. Mini-split remotes have several modes — Heat, Cool, Dry, Fan, and Auto — usually shown as small icons (a sun for heat, a snowflake for cool, a water drop for dry). Two traps catch people:
- Auto mode ambiguity. In Auto, the system picks heating or cooling based on the setpoint versus room temperature. If the setpoint is close to the current temperature, the unit may idle or even cool briefly when you expected heat. On a chilly Lakewood morning, set the mode explicitly to Heat and the setpoint a few degrees above room temperature.
- Multi-zone mode conflicts. On multi-zone systems, one outdoor unit serves several indoor heads — and it can only run in one direction at a time. If one head is set to Cool while another calls for Heat, most systems honor the first call and the other head simply waits, often blinking a code. Make sure every head in the house is set to Heat in winter.
Is it just defrosting?
In heating mode, the outdoor coil gets cold enough to frost over — especially in the Puget Sound's damp winter air, which frosts coils more readily than drier climates. The system periodically reverses itself for several minutes to melt that frost. During defrost, the indoor head stops blowing warm air (some blow nothing at all), you may hear a whoosh or see steam rising off the outdoor unit, and then normal heating resumes. This is not a malfunction. If the indoor unit pauses for five to ten minutes and recovers on its own, it was defrost. Constant defrosting, or a unit encased in ice that never clears, is a real problem worth a service call.
When did you last clean the filters?
Mini-split filters are washable screens behind the front panel of the indoor head, and they clog faster than people expect — often within a month or two in homes with pets. Restricted airflow makes heat output feel weak even when the system is working. Lift the front panel, slide the filters out, rinse them, let them dry, and reinstall. If the unit is several years old and airflow still feels feeble with clean filters, the blower wheel itself is likely coated in dust film — a common finding that meaningfully cuts output and needs a professional deep clean.
Is the outdoor unit clear?
The outdoor unit needs free airflow on all sides to pull heat from winter air. Clear away leaves, shrubs, snow, and anything stored against it, and make sure the base isn't sitting in standing water that can freeze around it. A unit suffocated by debris heats poorly and defrosts constantly.
What about refrigerant?
Mini-splits move heat with refrigerant, and a leak — often at the flare fittings on the line set — slowly starves the system. Symptoms: lukewarm air in heat mode, ice forming where it shouldn't, longer and longer runtimes, and blinking error codes on the indoor head. Refrigerant diagnosis and repair is strictly a licensed-technician job; there's no safe homeowner fix, and simply "topping off" a leaking system wastes money.
When to stop troubleshooting and call
Call a professional if the head is flashing an error code, the outdoor unit won't run at all, ice keeps building, airflow stays weak after a filter cleaning, or a multi-zone system has one head that never heats while others do.
