Furnace Won't Turn On? 6 Things to Check

From thermostats to safety lockouts — a calm, safe walkthrough before you call for heating service.

A furnace that won't start on a cold morning almost always traces to a short list of causes, and several of them are things you can check safely before calling anyone. Work through the checklist below in order — and if at any point you smell gas, stop and go straight to the safety section at the bottom of this page.

The safe homeowner checklist

  1. Thermostat first. Confirm the mode is set to Heat, the setpoint is a few degrees above room temperature, and the display is actually on. If the thermostat takes batteries, replace them — a dying battery can silently drop the call for heat with no other warning. Check that a schedule or vacation hold isn't overriding your setting.
  2. The furnace power switch. Most furnaces have a switch that looks exactly like a light switch mounted on or beside the unit, and it gets flipped off by accident more often than anyone admits — bumped while moving storage boxes, or shut off during other work and forgotten.
  3. The breaker. Look for a tripped breaker on the furnace circuit and reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call — a breaker that won't hold is reporting an electrical fault, not asking to be reset repeatedly.
  4. The filter and limit trips. A badly clogged filter starves the furnace of airflow, which overheats the heat exchanger and trips the high-limit safety switch. After enough repeated trips, many furnaces lock themselves out entirely. Replace a packed filter, but know that an existing lockout may still need to be cleared before heat returns.
  5. The condensate float switch (high-efficiency furnaces). Condensing furnaces produce water as they run. If the drain line clogs, a float switch shuts the furnace down to prevent an overflow. Standing water at the drain trap or a full condensate pump reservoir is the giveaway.

The blinking light is trying to tell you something

Most modern furnaces have a small LED visible through a window in the lower access panel, and it flashes a coded pattern when something is wrong — three flashes, pause, repeat, for example. The legend for those codes is usually printed inside the panel door. You don't need to fix what the code describes; just note the pattern before you call. It gives the technician a genuine head start on the diagnosis.

Leave these to a technician

  • Hot-surface ignitor. Most modern furnaces light their burners with a brittle ceramic ignitor that simply cracks with age. It's one of the most common no-heat causes, and replacement means working inside the burner compartment.
  • Flame sensor. A residue-coated flame sensor makes the furnace light, fail to confirm the flame, and shut the gas off within seconds — over and over. Cleaning it correctly means opening the combustion area.
  • Gas valve. If the valve isn't opening on command, that's a gas-side repair, full stop. Never a homeowner job.
  • Control board lockout codes. Repeated safety trips put the control board into a hard lockout on purpose. Resetting it without fixing the underlying cause just replays the failure — and defeats a protection that exists for a reason.

A Pacific Northwest wrinkle: dual-fuel homes

Many South Sound homes now run a heat pump as the primary heat source with the gas furnace as backup for the coldest stretches. In those systems, a "furnace won't turn on" complaint is sometimes actually a controls handoff issue — the balance-point setting or outdoor sensor deciding when the furnace should take over from the heat pump. If your heat pump heats fine but the furnace never engages during a cold snap, mention the dual-fuel setup when you call; it changes what the technician checks first.

Stop and call immediately if…

You smell gas (a rotten-egg odor), hear hissing near the unit or gas line, or see soot or scorch marks around the furnace. Leave the house, call your gas utility from outside, and then call a licensed HVAC company. Treat a carbon monoxide alarm exactly the same way — get everyone out first. A cracked heat exchanger can leak CO into your home's air supply, and it is never, under any circumstances, a DIY repair.
