Furnace Blowing Cold Air? Here's What's Happening
Cold air from a running furnace usually means the fan is set to run without heat, the burners aren't lighting (ignitor or flame sensor), a safety limit is tripping from overheating, or ducts are leaking the heat away.

When a furnace pushes air but no heat, the blower is doing its job while the burners aren't doing theirs. The air moving through your ducts is only warm if flame is heating the heat exchanger — so cold air means the flame either never lit, lit and went out, or the heat is escaping before it reaches your rooms. Here's how to narrow it down, starting with the checks that cost nothing.
Is it actually a furnace problem?
First, look at the thermostat. If the fan is set to On instead of Auto, the blower runs continuously — including between heating cycles, when it circulates room-temperature air that feels cold coming out of a register. Switch the fan to Auto and see if the "cold air" disappears. Also confirm the mode is Heat and the setpoint is above room temperature. This resolves a surprising share of no-heat calls.
The mechanical causes
- A failed hot-surface ignitor. Most modern furnaces light the burners with a glowing ceramic ignitor rather than a pilot light. Ignitors are brittle and simply crack with age — the blower runs, but nothing ever lights. A very common cold-air cause.
- A dirty flame sensor. This small rod confirms the burners actually lit. When it's coated in residue, the furnace lights, can't "see" the flame, and shuts the gas off within seconds as a safety measure. The classic pattern: a few minutes of warm air, then cold, then a retry.
- Overheating limit trips. If a clogged filter or blocked return starves the furnace of airflow, the heat exchanger overheats and a high-limit switch cuts the burners while the blower keeps running to cool things down — blowing cold air at you in the process. Repeated limit trips can put the furnace into lockout.
- Duct leaks stealing the heat. In many South Sound homes the ducts run through a vented, chilly crawlspace or attic. Leaky or disconnected ducts dump warm air into those spaces, so what arrives at the register is lukewarm at best. If some rooms get decent heat and others get cold air, ducts are a prime suspect.
- Condensate or venting faults on high-efficiency furnaces, which shut burners down when a drain backs up or a vent is blocked.
Safe homeowner checks
- Set the fan to Auto and the mode to Heat.
- Replace the filter if it's dirty and make sure return grilles aren't blocked by furniture.
- Check the furnace power switch and breaker.
- Listen through one full startup: do you hear the ignition click and burners light, then shut off shortly after? That pattern points to the flame sensor.
Technician territory
Replacing an ignitor, cleaning and testing a flame sensor, diagnosing limit-switch lockouts, and inspecting the heat exchanger all involve gas combustion and safety controls — not a place to experiment. Repeated safety trips exist to protect you; bypassing or repeatedly resetting them is genuinely dangerous.
When to call a pro
If the fan-and-filter checks don't restore heat, or the furnace lights and dies in a repeating loop, book a diagnostic. A technician can test the ignition sequence, clean or replace the failing component, verify the heat exchanger is sound, and check whether duct leakage is quietly stealing the heat you're paying for.
