Why Are My Energy Bills So High?

Rising HVAC bills usually mean the system is working harder than it should — here's where the money leaks.

Heating and cooling is the single biggest energy load in most homes, so when a bill climbs — or climbs a little more every season — the HVAC system is the first place to look. High bills are rarely a mystery once you know where the money actually leaks. Here are the usual suspects, roughly in the order we find them.

Where the money leaks

  • Aging equipment losing efficiency. Systems don't fail all at once; they fade. Worn compressors, dirty coils, and degraded blower motors mean an older system burns more energy to deliver less comfort than it did when new. If your bills have crept upward year over year with no change in your habits, efficiency decay is a prime suspect.
  • Duct leakage. In many South Sound homes, the ductwork runs through a vented crawlspace — cold, damp, and outside the insulated envelope. Every leak in those runs dumps air you paid to heat straight into the crawlspace. You're conditioning the space under your house, and the rooms above it never feel quite right.
  • Electric-resistance heat. Baseboards, wall heaters, and electric furnaces convert one unit of electricity into one unit of heat — the least efficient way to heat a home electrically. A heat pump moves heat instead of generating it, delivering far more heat per unit of electricity. If your home heats with resistance electric, this is usually the largest single line item on your winter bill.
  • Short cycling from oversizing. A system too big for the house slams to temperature, shuts off, and restarts minutes later. Startup is the most expensive moment in a compressor's life, so dozens of extra starts a day quietly inflate the bill while wearing out the equipment.
  • Thermostat habits. Big manual swings — cranking the setpoint way up to "heat faster," which it doesn't — and heating unoccupied hours both cost real money. Modest, scheduled setbacks are the free fix here.

Read your winter/summer gap

Your utility's usage history is a free diagnostic. Compare your mildest months (usually spring and fall, when heating and cooling barely run) against your winter peak. The mild months approximate your baseline — lights, appliances, hot water. Everything above that line in January is essentially your heating cost. A dramatic winter spike over baseline points at the heating system itself: resistance heat, duct losses, or a struggling unit. A gap that widens each year with the same weather and habits points at equipment decline.

Do high bills mean repair or upgrade?

It depends on what's leaking. A refrigerant leak, a failing capacitor, a filthy coil, or a stuck damper are repairs — a diagnostic and a fix restore the efficiency you already paid for. Duct sealing is somewhere in the middle: not glamorous, but often one of the highest-return improvements in a crawlspace home. But if the equipment is old, the bills are structurally high because of how the system works (resistance heat especially), and repairs are stacking up, no tune-up will change the underlying math. That's when an upgrade conversation is honest rather than salesy.

The structural fix for electric-heat homes

For homes heating with electric resistance, converting to a heat pump is the structural answer, not a tweak. The same electricity that ran your baseboards moves several times more heat through a heat pump, and our mild Pacific Northwest winters are close to ideal heat pump territory — modern cold-climate units handle South Sound temperatures comfortably. Utility rebates and federal tax credits frequently apply to qualifying heat pump installations, which improves the payback further; the exact figures change, so verify current programs when you get a quote. A load calculation and a review of your actual usage history will show whether the numbers work for your home — that's a conversation worth having with real data on the table, not a brochure.
