Ice on Your Heat Pump: Normal Frost or Real Problem?

Light frost that melts off during a defrost cycle — often with a dramatic cloud of steam — is completely normal. A solid block of ice that never clears means an airflow, refrigerant, or defrost-control failure.

Some frost on your heat pump's outdoor unit in winter is normal, and so is the burst of steam you'll occasionally see rising off it — that's the defrost cycle working exactly as designed. What's not normal is a coil encased in solid ice that never clears, ice that climbs up the cabinet, or a unit frozen over in summer. Here's how to tell the two apart.

Why frost forms — and why the Puget Sound makes it worse

In heating mode, the outdoor coil runs colder than the outside air so it can absorb heat. When that coil surface drops below freezing, moisture in the air condenses and freezes onto it as frost. The wetter the air, the faster frost builds — and the South Sound's signature wet-cold weather, hovering in the 30s and 40s with near-saturated marine air, is close to ideal frost-making conditions. Heat pumps here frost up more often than the same units would in a colder but drier climate. That's expected, and the equipment is built for it.

The defrost cycle: steam is normal

Every heat pump monitors its outdoor coil and periodically runs a defrost cycle: it briefly reverses into cooling mode to send hot refrigerant through the outdoor coil and melt the frost off. During defrost you may notice the outdoor fan stop, a whooshing or swooshing sound as the reversing valve shifts, water dripping from the base, and — most alarmingly to new heat pump owners — a plume of steam rising off the unit. None of that is smoke. It's water vapor from melting frost hitting a hot coil, and it means the system is taking care of itself. A defrost cycle typically wraps up within about ten minutes, and the coil comes out clear.

When ice means something is wrong

  • The coil stays iced between cycles. If ice builds into a solid sheet or block and defrost never clears it, the defrost control, its sensor, or the reversing valve may have failed.
  • Airflow is choked. A coil packed with leaves and fir needles, shrubs crowding the cabinet, or snow drifted against the unit restricts airflow and accelerates icing. Water dripping from a gutter or roofline directly onto the unit can also build ice faster than defrost can remove it.
  • Refrigerant is low. An undercharged system runs the coil abnormally cold and ices even in mild conditions — this needs a licensed technician.
  • Ice in cooling season. A frozen unit in July points to low refrigerant or a serious airflow problem, not weather.

What you can safely do

Keep a couple of feet of clearance around the unit, clear leaves and debris from the coil, redirect dripping water away from the cabinet, and gently rinse light ice with a garden hose if temperatures allow. Never chip, pry, or scrape ice off the coils. The aluminum fins and refrigerant tubing behind the ice are thin and soft; one slip with a screwdriver can puncture a line and turn a maintenance issue into a major repair. Don't run the fan with objects near it, either.

When to call a pro

If the unit stays iced after a full defrost cycle, ices up repeatedly within hours, runs constantly without keeping the house warm, or freezes during cooling season, book a diagnostic. A technician can test the defrost board and sensor, verify the refrigerant charge, and check the reversing valve — the three failure points behind almost every genuine ice problem. Catching it early protects the compressor, which is the component you least want an ice problem to reach.
