AC Short Cycling: Why Your System Keeps Turning On and Off
An AC that starts, runs a few minutes, and shuts off is short cycling — usually from oversizing, low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or a thermostat problem, and it wears out equipment fast.

If your air conditioner turns on, runs for only a few minutes, and shuts back off — then repeats that loop over and over — it's short cycling. The system is starting a cooling cycle but ending it before the job is done. A normal cycle should run long enough to actually pull heat and humidity out of the house, typically well past the ten-minute mark. Short cycling means something is either tripping a safety, fooling the thermostat, or the equipment simply can't sustain a full run.
What causes an AC to short cycle?
- An oversized system. A unit too big for the home blasts the thermostat's sensor to temperature in minutes and shuts down before it dehumidifies or evens out the rest of the house. This is common when equipment was replaced "like for like" without a load calculation — and it's why some Lakewood and South Sound homes feel clammy even when the thermostat reads fine.
- Low or leaking refrigerant. A starved system can ice the evaporator coil or trip a low-pressure safety, cutting the cycle short. Refrigerant work requires a licensed technician — it isn't a top-off-and-forget fix.
- A dirty coil or clogged filter. Restricted airflow makes the coil run too cold and can trip freeze protection. The outdoor condenser coil matters too: fir needles, cottonwood fluff, and grass clippings choke it every spring around here.
- Thermostat placement or faults. A thermostat mounted near a supply register, a sunny window, or a heat-producing appliance gets satisfied (or confused) long before the rest of the house does. Failing sensors and loose wiring cause the same erratic behavior.
- Electrical problems. A weak run capacitor, failing contactor, or an overheating compressor can start a cycle and then drop out. These faults get worse, not better, with each restart.
Why short cycling is worse than it sounds
Startup is the hardest moment in a compressor's life — it draws the most current and creates the most mechanical stress. A short-cycling system racks up dozens of extra startups a day, which drives up your electric bill while doing less actual cooling. It also skips the long, steady runtime that removes humidity, so the house feels sticky even at the set temperature. Left alone, short cycling is one of the fastest ways to shorten a compressor's life.
What you can safely check first
- Replace the air filter if it's dirty — the cheapest possible fix.
- Clear leaves, needles, and debris from around the outdoor unit and gently rinse visible dirt off the coil fins with a garden hose (system off).
- Confirm the thermostat isn't in direct sun or next to a register, and swap batteries if it takes them.
- Check that supply and return vents are open and unblocked.
If the cycling continues after those checks, the cause is almost certainly refrigerant, electrical, or sizing — none of which are homeowner territory.
When to call a pro
Repeated short cycling is a symptom that compounds: every extra start stresses the compressor a little more. A diagnostic visit lets a technician measure refrigerant pressures, test the capacitor and contactor under load, and verify the system is sized and charged correctly — so you fix the actual cause instead of replaying the loop all summer. Booking a diagnostic sooner is nearly always cheaper than waiting for the compressor to give up.
